As summer fades and the days begin to draw in, autumn brings a whole new atmosphere to Derry~Londonderry and the wider Northwest. Crisp mornings, golden foliage, and dramatic autumn skies make it the perfect time to lace up your walking boots and explore. 

From peaceful riverside paths and leafy parks in the city to woodland trails, mountain landscapes and coastal walks across the region, there is no shortage of places to get out and enjoy the changing season. So, why not embrace the season and discover some of the best walks to enjoy this autumn? 

Walls of Derry  

Take a walk through history with a stroll along our iconic city walls. Along the way, soak up views across the city, discover Europe’s largest collection of Canons; step inside churches and museums and soak up the colours of the season. With history, culture, and plenty of photo-worthy views around every turn; this is the perfect Autumn stroll.  

St Columb’s Park  

A short, scenic walk across the Peace Bridge and you will be at St Columb’s Park. Within this 70-acre park; you will discover a bronze statue of the parks namesake amongst the trees. Along the beautiful, wooded walkways you will also find the ruins of a medieval church and an 18th century Manor House. There is also a small play park and artwork dedicated to some local heroes. Why not grab a drink and a sweet treat at Ebrington Bakery after your walk?

Foyle Valley Greenway 

Locally known as ‘Out the line’ this walkway follows a 5-mile linear route along the old Derry~Donegal railway line towards the border with the Republic of Ireland. Start at the old Foyle Valley Railway Station next to the Craigavon Bridge and walk south along the River Foyle. The perfect walk to escape the bustle of the city.

Waterside Greenway  

Connecting the Peace Bridge with the Foyle Bridge via St Columbs Park - this section of the City Greenway runs parallel to the train line. The walkway leads you to the Gransha Woods where you can truly immerse yourself in the colours of the season. Alternatively, you can continue along the new Greenway towards Strathfoyle. Why not warm yourself with a drink from The Fold either before or after your stroll along the Greenway?

Strabane Canal Towpath 

Follow the old Strabane Canal Towpath through the countryside. This gentle walk offers tranquil waterside views, autumn foliage, and plenty of space to slow down and take it all in. A lovely spot for a peaceful, crisp autumn stroll.

Killeter Forest Trails 

For those looking for something a little more challenging – why not choose one of the trails through Killeter Forest. With four waymarked trails varying in length from 3km-12km there is something for every ability. Throughout the trails you will find information panels that will reveal the story behind the area, its habitats and notable wildlife. When you have completed your chosen trail, why not take a drive and discover the Giants of the Sperrins Sculpture Trail. 

Creggan Country Park  

This 100-acre site is located a short 10min drive out of the city. Creggan Country Park is home to three freshwater lakes, woodland, hedgerow, and wildflower meadows; making this the perfect spot for a gentle stroll. Why not bring the whole family and enjoy one of their many outdoor activities that include an assault course, orienteering and paddle-boarding.  

Oakfield Park  

Situated in Raphoe, Co. Donegal; just 30mins from the city lies the privately owned Oakfield Estate and Gardens. Sitting in a lush landscape of parklands, lakes, and mature woodlands the grounds of Oakfield Park include a hedge maze, sculptures, a railway, and miles of walking paths. They are only open until September 27th but also plan a few seasonal events including their popular Pumpkin Express.  

Roe Valley Country Park  

Lose yourself among the woodland trails of Roe Valley Country Park, where the River Roe winds through a landscape of ancient trees, rushing water and autumn colour. For the perfect family Autumn Break, take a walk through the Country Park then check into the nearby Roe Valley Resort and take advantage of the range of kid activities before enjoying a hands-on pizza making session at Fratelli's.  

Faughan Valley Woodlands 

This stunning collection of small, once fragmented, woodlands that have recently been connected thanks to the Woodland Trust and funding partners; is the perfect spot for an Autumn stroll. Explore the breathtaking landscapes and immerse yourself in the tranquil beauty of nature. You will also find a beautiful sculpture trail that weaves throughout the woodlands where hidden wonders are just waiting to be explored. For adrenaline junkies - why not take a visit to Oakfire Adventures where you can fly through the trees on their zip trekking experience or have the whole family harness up for the Tree Top Adventure.  

International Appalachian Trail: Ulster-Ireland  

For those who are keen outdoor adventurers, why not explore our local section of the International Appalachian Trail - just one of a growing number of established IAT walking trails across 3 continents that all share a common geological heritage; the Appalachian-Caledonian Mountains. The IAT Ulster-Ireland is 279 miles long; beginning in Southwest Donegal at the spectacular Slieve League cliffs, the trail journeys inland along the Blue Stack Way into Co. Tyrone; through the stunning Sperrin Mountains, passes the Giants Causeway and along the North Antrim Coastline, traversing the Glens of Antrim and concluding in Larne, Co. Antrim
