The Midsummer Gala Concert is the culmination of our Concert Series at Saint Columb’s Hall. The winner of the St Columb’s Hall Concerto Prize returns to play Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto 1. This masterpiece has been described as a rule-breaking, Neo-baroque romp filled with sardonic humour, parody and fleeting musical quotations.
Completed by the young Shostakovich in 1933, it is actually a double concerto in which the solo trumpet and piano converse against the backdrop of strings.
