Discover Gorta, Swatragh’s Famine Story, through a self-guided visitor experience that combines powerful storytelling, thoughtful design and 21st-century technology and uncover the history of the village and the remarkable legacy of Dr. Mooney.
Developed by Dermot Friel the project was inspired by the discovery of an original famine pot in 1992 and renewed local interest in the historic Friel site.
In the mid-1800s, Dr. Mooney and his wife Sarah ran a surgery and dispensary here, and during An Gorta Mór (the Great Hunger) established a private soup kitchen to support the local community. Their story—and the wider experience of famine—is brought to life through interpretative panels, audiovisual displays and striking bog oak sculptures by Kieran Tuohy.
Reflecting Heritage at Risk, Gorta preserves the fragile stories of communities shaped by famine, emigration and loss, ensuring they are not forgotten.
Marking 120 years of Friel family ownership, Gorta offers a place for reflection, learning and connection, inviting visitors to explore the past at their own pace and consider its continuing relevance today.
