Culmore Fort EHOD 2026

About

Join us for a guided heritage walk from the vibrant Culmore Community Hub along the scenic riverside path to the historic Culmore Fort, one of the most significant landmarks on the banks of the River Foyle.

This special EHOD event offers visitors the opportunity to explore the rich history of Culmore, a place shaped by centuries of trade, migration, defence and community life.

Culmore Fort occupies a strategic position where the River Foyle meets Lough Foyle and has played an important role in the story of the wider region for generations. The area is closely linked to maritime history, early settlement, and the Plantation period, while the surrounding landscape continues to reflect Culmore’s deep connection to the river and its people.

Visitors will hear about the extensive conservation and restoration work carried out in 2025 to protect and revitalise this once-disused historic building. The project focused on preserving the character and heritage of the Fort while creating opportunities for future community use and cultural activity.

This walk is a chance to experience local history, enjoy beautiful riverside views, and discover how heritage conservation can help reconnect communities with their past.

Accessibility - Participants are required to park at Culmore Community Hub as there is very limited parking at Culmore Fort which is reserved for Blue Badge holders.  The Tour Guide will lead the group to the Fort which is along a riverside, public road. The walk will take approx. 8 minutes. Those with mobility issues can begin the tour at Culmore Fort.
