We are thrilled to introduce a brand-new experience for Summer 2025 at Seamus Heaney HomePlace — A Bite and Sup, a thoughtfully curated tour that weaves together poetry, place, and local flavours to celebrate the life and legacy of Seamus Heaney.
Your journey begins at HomePlace with a tour of our award-winning exhibition, offering profound insights into Heaney's writing, his inspirations, and his roots in rural South Derry.
Immerse yourself in the spirit of 'Heaney Country' with a visit to Heaney Brewery, nestled in the green fields of the Heaney family farm at The Wood in Bellaghy. Soak in the rural views and enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at how their craft beers are made. Learn about the stories and inspirations behind the beers and enjoy guided tastings of some of the Heaney farmhouse favourites.
Following the brewery experience, venture out on the Open Ground self-guided tour. Explore the fields, lanes, and landmarks that define 'Heaney Country' and discover the landscapes that shaped his poetry.
Your day concludes with a relaxed evening meal at The Taphouse Bar and Restaurant in the heart of Bellaghy, the perfect setting to share your experience with fellow poetry enthusiasts.
Itinerary
12:30pm – Meet at Seamus Heaney HomePlace
12.30pm – 1.45pm – Begin your day with a guided tour of the award-winning exhibition. Immerse yourself in the life, work, and inspirations of Seamus Heaney through carefully curated displays of poetry, photographs, and personal artifacts that highlight his deep connection to South Derry's rural landscape.
1:45pm – Depart for Heaney Farmhouse Brewery. Enjoy a scenic drive to the brewery located on The Wood — the family farm once worked by Heaney's father and brother.
2:00pm – 2.45pm – Upon arrival, embark on a 45-minute guided tour of the Heaney Farmhouse Brewery. Discover the brewing process and the heritage of the site, then savour a tasting session featuring a selection of locally crafted ales, immersing yourself in the authentic flavours of the region.
2:45pm – Depart for the Open Ground self-guided tour. Begin your exploration of the evocative landscapes that inspired Heaney's poetry, setting out on your journey through this meaningful countryside.
3:00pm – 5.30pm – Begin the Open Ground self-guided tour. Wander through fields, lanes, and landmarks integral to Heaney's creative life. Encounter the natural surroundings and significant sites that shaped his poetry as you explore at your own pace.
Before 6:00 pm – Arrive at The Taphouse in the heart of Bellaghy for dinner. Conclude your day with a relaxed, convivial meal at The Taphouse Bar and Restaurant, enjoying a delicious menu crafted from locally sourced ingredients — the perfect setting to reflect on your poetic and sensory journey alongside fellow guests.
