About
This delightful, family-run bar can trace its history right back to 1729, making it the second oldest bar outside of the Walled City. Its location couldn't be better. The Gainsborough opens onto the historic Guildhall Square and is right beside the framed City Walls, where guided tours are available. The bar also faces towards the Peace Bridge and provides one of the finest views of the River Foyle to the newly refurbished train station and the former Ebrington Barracks, originally created as a British Naval Base during the Napolenic War.
There's something for everyone at the Gainsborough and our highly trained staff are there to advise and provide you with a memorable experience. Whether it's how to make the perfect hot whiskey or to encourage you in Karaoke at the weekend.
What about the name? The bar is named after the former painter, Thomas Gainsborough. It was opened at the same time Jonathan Swift was writing.
So, can we make a modest proposal? Come and visit.
