Chopin and Bruckner

Londonderry/Derry, 14 May 2020

Chopin’s two Piano Concertos were written within a year of each other as the composer, in his late teens, was making plans to leave his native Poland. This Concerto is designed to showcase the pianist as the absolute star of the show; Chopin’s writing is inventive, poetic and brilliant, resulting in a concerto with an eloquence and operatic flair that belied the composer’s youth.

Bruckner’s insecurities as a composer meant he often revised and rewrote work, but the Sixth Symphony was a favourite of his and therefore remained as he originally composed it. And there is much to love about its dynamism, rhythmic invention and orchestral colour – its fire and drama make it a compelling listen.
