IDEAS FOR A VALENTINE'S PROPOSAL IN DERRY

The most romantic day of the year is just around the corner, and there's no better place to spend it than in the Walled City of Derry. We’ve put together a list of just some of the most romantic places to pop the question in Derry~Londonderry this year. With its quirky streets, iconic buildings and amazing 400-year-old City Walls we think our city is pretty magical.

1. Cream Horn at Doherty’s bakery

If it’s good enough for Grandad Joe’s romances in Derry Girls (If you remember he was caught buying an apple turnover and a cream horn shortly before ‘turning up Pump Street), then it would make a quirky marriage proposal for those with a sweet tooth. Why not order your cream horn in Doherty’s Bakery, and pick up the ring from D Cooley’s Jewellers on Shipquay Street.

2. City Walls

Take a step back in time and walk the stunning City Walls Walled City - 400 years. Built more than 400 years ago the Derry Walls span a one mile stretch  with a number of look out points dotted along the way. The 17th century Walls are open from dusk till dawn and would be an ideal, intimate engagement proposal spot.

3. Craft Village

Often dubbed the Walled City’s hidden gem, the stunning Craft Village is so beautiful inside, it would make the perfect place to propose to your special someone.

4. One of our stunning parks

The city is blessed with beautiful parks and we're lucky to have St Columb's Park and Brooke Park just a short walk from the city centre. Why not enjoy a romantic stroll among the grounds and pop that all important question before enjoying the buzz of the city's bars and restaurants.

5. Ness Country Park

Visit Northern Ireland's biggest waterfall located just a few miles from the city, at Ness Country Park. The area consists of 55 hectares of mixed woodland along with open parkland which extends along both sides of the Burntollet River. There are over 7km of stunning woodland and riverside walks.

6. Peace Bridge

The beautiful peace bridge which connects two sides of the city together was built back in 2011 tells a story of triumph over adversity and, designed like a handshake across the water, it is the symbol of peace. Get down on bended knee and pop the question to the backdrop of the stunning Walled City behind you.

7. One of our city Hotels

We have some pretty spectacular hotels in the city, some boast stunning gardens, and even a rooftop bar. Check out the range of hotels we have here.

If you're staying in The City Hotel’s seventh floor - which gives you access to the roof top garden - then why not enjoy a glass of bubbly under the stars with the view of the city skyline. It offers seclusion and would make the perfect marriage proposal location.

8. Sports fan?

If you and your other half are mad about football and are big fans of our very own Derry City FC then this could be the perfect place for you.

 9. Guildhall Square

Why not propose either inside or outside The Guildhall. The Guildhall is a beautiful building and is well worth taking time to see. It is located in the heart of the city, just outside the City Walls and close to the Peace Bride.

Fashioned in neo-gothic style, the Guildhall is one of the most striking buildings in the North West and was originally built in 1887 by The Honourable The Irish Society. The red sandstone building is of neo-gothic architecture, with Tudor overtones. The Guildhall contains stunning examples of stained glass windows and visitors will be intrigued by its unique history and appeal. The staircase, main hall organ and corridors give a fascinating insight into this distinctive building.

10. Enjoy a glamping holiday

Relax and unwind at the Secret Spa in Claudy or at the Carrowmena Activity Centre and enjoy a glamping holiday. Both are positioned just a few miles from the city. The Sectret Spa is based in a magical picturesque sleepy valley with stunning sunset and views of the Sperrin Mountains and makes a beautiful setting to pop the question. While, Carrowmena is located in Limavady and is based at the foot of Binevenagh along the Causeway Coastal Route. It is a perfect location for exploring beautiful beaches and basing yourself while you explore the City.
