Ulster Orchestra – Rachmaninov's Second

Londonderry/Derry, 09 May 2019

Guildhall, Derry-Londonderry, BT48 7BB

Northern Ireland’s own virtuoso pianist, Barry Douglas, joins the Orchestra to perform Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto, often described as one of the best piano concertos ever written.

A masterpiece of melodic writing, it’s no surprise that it is a regular choice on Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, also featuring in the film Brief Encounter and Eric Carmen’s smash hit, All By Myself!

Stravinsky’s Petrushka took on a traditional Russian folk tale for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and used all of the composer’s hallmark traits to create a work full of atmostphere. As for the story, it’s the classic tale: Puppet comes to life, Puppet loves Ballerina, Ballerina loves Moor, a duel ensues – will Petrushka win the day…?
