As the dark skies of winter fall away, Derry-Londonderry will welcome the spring with open arms in a cacophony of colour and spectacle. If you're young in years or young at heart come along and join local communities take to the streets in a celebration of youth.The carnival will include the St. Patrick's Day Spring Carnival Parade, St. Patrick's Day Strabane and the Ubuntu Global Festival 2019.This year’s carnival parade will be a celebration of children and young people. The themes explored will include depictions of youth in myth and legend both in the Celtic tradition and in the many diverse cultures across the world.Tír na nÓg (the Land of Youth) is best known from the tale of Oisín and Niamh. In the tale, Oisín (a human hero) and Niamh (a woman of the Otherworld) fall in love. She brings him to Tír na nÓg on a magical horse that can travel over water.Fantastical creatures will snake their way through the city’s streets along with a host of characters representing young people from fables and fairy tales from faraway lands. Today’s youth and culture will have pride of place, so expect to be delighted by dance moves from everything from ballet to hip hop.This year will see pageant pieces from North West Carnival, Greater Shantallow Community Arts, In Your Space and involve over 600 participants from local schools, youth clubs and arts and cultural organisations.The Ubuntu Global Festival will take place on Saturday 16th March at the Guildhall Square in Derry-Londonderry and is a celebration of global cultures represented in our local community and encompasses music & performance, arts & crafts, storytelling, exhibitions and much more.St. Patrick's Day Strabane will take place on Sunday 17th March - expect floats, amazing traditional and extravagant costumes, face painting, props and illuminated inflatables.
