For the first time since our inception, we are expanding our one day festival into a whole week of exciting Japanese cultural events and workshops, suitable for all the family from May 18th to May 25th.The programme includes workshops in Taiko drumming, the Japanese crafts of Origami and Manga art, learning how to make cute felt Kokeshi Dolls, workshops in the art of Haiku and Tanka poetry, a screening of the amazing Shin Godzilla, an intimate tea ceremony in the grounds of the Beech Hill hotel, Japanese cookery demonstrations and a fun fundraising and lantern signing event in Foyleside. We will close the week with our annual spectacular Foyle Obon Festival at the Playtrail. This beautiful setting is transformed into a Little Tokyo for an evening of Japanese dance, taiko drumming, arts, crafts and games as well as martial arts, food and our beautiful lantern ceremony which closes the festival for another year.We are so excited and honoured to welcome the illustrious San Jose Taiko company to our city this year. They will be teaching school children the art of taiko during the week as well as performing at the Festival event on the last day.O-Bon is for everyone, an inclusive event for all ages, this year offering even more. O-Bon means to respect the past and those who have gone before us and also to celebrate the present with goof food, fun and family. Taiko drumming, dancing and love is central.
